Sixth Astral Era - Year 1547In those days, few in Limsa Lominsa would not have heard of Lena Auclair, dread captain of the Thorned Roses. Ishgardian by birth, she had fled her home city to start a life where she could live freely - a pirate's life. Her former encounters with poverty and oppression manifested as anger and recklessness, and it wasn't long before she came to be known for her cruelty. Despite her violent nature, she was a beautiful, strong woman, and she had many admirers. In Limsa's taverns men would flock to her, many of whom she would sleep with. One of these men managed to leave her with child. This man was named Svein, an elf from Voeburt who had been sucked into the Lifestream by his white mage companion and allowed to pass to the Source. He had lived in secrecy in the Source after the Flood had engulfed the First, but it was only years later did he realize his aether had become slightly corrupted with light.Svein was one among many, leaving Lena clueless as to who the father was, and she failed to track him or any of the other men down after learning of her situation. She was angry; she didn't want to have a child, that would mean obligations and responsibilities she wasn't prepared for in the slightest. After consulting with her crew, she decided she would take advantage of the situation and raise her child into a Thorned Rose after her own prestige, with her hopes that they would become worthy enough to take her place as captain one day. Lena eventually gave birth to a son, whom she named Percival: A fierce Ishgardian name for a soon-to-be fierce warrior, she thought.

Sixth Astral Era - Year 1554When Percival was old enough, Lena began training him to fight with daggers. Unbeknownst to anyone at the time, however, Percy's body was constantly fighting the light corruption he had inherited from his father. As a result, he had limited energy and fell ill on occasion. This caused Lena's patience with the boy to quickly grow thin, and when he did poorly in his duties, she began to scold him and, sadly, sometimes even hit him. Not surprisingly, this took a toll on Percival, and he developed an intense fear of failure as a result of his mother's abuse. Though the other Roses saw what was happening, there wasn't much they could do to change Lena. Mutiny was also not an option: several members were of a similar mindset to their captain, and would not consider it for the sake of one bastard child. Other members tried to offer comfort to Percival, including Skala, an orphaned Roegadyn girl, as well as her guardian, D'navi, the ship's navigator.

Sixth Astral Era - Year 1567The Thorned Roses were faced with a major problem: Admiral Merlwyb had risen to power and outlawed all piracy in La Noscean waters. Lena became furious at this ludicrous attempt to take away all the freedom she had so enjoyed in her life away from Ishgard, and she immediately began plotting an attempt on the Admiral's life. Percival, now almost fifteen summers old, voiced his concern with the mission to his mother, only to receive the tip of her dagger in return, leaving behind the massive scar between his eyes.Lena's attempt failed, resulting in her and her subordinates that joined her being sent to prison for their crimes. Now free from her clutches, Percival and the remaining Roses swore allegiance to the Admiral and began raiding Garlean ships as permitted. Though he felt liberated now that his mother was gone, Percy still found himself plagued by nightmares of her abuse, and her hurtful words still rang in his ears as he woke up each morning. In addition, he had never seen magitek before, and felt scared and unprepared every time he was tasked with a mission. Finding himself spiraling, he decided to leave his life of piracy in favor of that of an adventurer. Perhaps he could find a new life and a way to deal with his strange occasional sickness, or even find his father if he was lucky.

Sixth Astral Era - Year 1569One day at a tavern in Gridania, Percival met an Elezen man by the name of Drernnoux. He introduced himself as a former knight of Ishgard who had left the city after being branded a heretic. Drernnoux saw Percy to be an angry young man with a tremendous amount of hurt built up inside him and no way to release it. He offered to be a mentor to Percy in navigating his wants and needs, and to give him an outlet for his internal rage: the path of a dark knight. "The torment you suffered? You'll be able to use it for the benefit of others. Though it is risky in certain ways, it's an effective and noble manner of life, despite what others may say about wielding the darkness."Percy agreed, and began living his life alongside Drernnoux as a dark knight. Not only was his power most impressive, the nightmares were less and less, he rarely got sick anymore since he learned to focus dark aether onto himself, and he found himself somewhat at peace for the first time in his life. Tragically, this was cut short when Drernnoux passed away in the Calamity, giving Percy a new emotion to contend with: grief. Nowadays, Percival leads a life as an adventurer, sometimes giving his might as mercenary to Limsa Lominsa whenever he needs some extra gil. He's traveled across the world, searching for his birth father, lending a hand to those in need whenever he is met with the opportunity, continuing the journeys he had with Drernnoux, and living the free life his mother had always wanted to keep.

The Thorned Roses
Percival's mother used to be feared by many, and stories of her crew, the Thorned Roses, have been passed down through the years by the folk of Limsa Lominsa even after piracy had been outlawed. Within these stories, rumors had also been spread about the captain having a bastard son, whom not much is known about. If you're in the know about Lominsan pirates and you hear Percival mention anything that would hint to him being the son of Captain Lena Auclair (whether it be his last name or descriptions he gives of his mother or crew), perhaps you'd connect the dots.Ally of Ishgard
After Ishgard opened its doors to the public, Percival traveled there to see the land his mentor and his mother grew up in. What he saw was a city in the process of restoration, and he felt a calling to the cause as a man of Ishgardian blood. Despite receiving disdain from locals for being a half-breed, he soon proved his worth by aiding the Knights in various skirmishes, helping with construction efforts, and bringing food and supplies to the people of the Brume. He'd also make jewelry when he could for the impoverished individuals he grew close with as a gift. Maybe you'd know about the kind "outsider" dark knight who devoted himself to the restoration of Ishgard.Aetherial Corruption
